Remembrance of Things Past: The Films of Terence Davies

Talk

Please note: This event took place in Dec 2018

"Memory doesn’t work in a linear way. It’s cyclical, and each memory triggers something else." - Terence Davies

To celebrate our Terence Davies season join Tara Judah, Watershed Cinema Producer for an illustrated talk on Davies and his work, as we dig deeper into his cinematic explorations of the intersections between class, gender and social codes, and the unexpected ripples of remembered time.

Terence Davies is one of the greatest living filmmakers in Britain and yet he has just barely made eleven films (including the three shorts that make up The Terence Davies Trilogy). Refusing to compromise on his striking and singular vision, he has struggled to secure funding over the years and his output has been sporadic. Freer in a digital age than he was before, Davies has returned to form in recent years with The Deep Blue Sea, Sunset Song and A Quiet Passion.

Now, with the stunning digital restoration of his most highly acclaimed title, Distant Voices, Still Lives, we are delighted to bring four of Davies’ most seminal films back to the big screen.

Winning more acclaim and awards from International Critics’ than the establishment, Davies has only recently reached the international levels of fame of his contemporaries such as Mike Leigh and Derek Jarman and, though he says he doesn’t feel part of British cinema, there is no mistaking the significant place of his work among the nation’s finest. This talk will be a chance to celebrate and rediscover his brilliant body of work.
