Knight of Cups

There's nothing quite like a new Terrence Malick film. In Knight of Cups, his seventh feature in 38 years, a gliding camera accompanies a tormented hero on his search for meaning. Gorgeously shot (from The Revenant and Birdman director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki) and featuring an all-star cast, this is a very pretty satire on the emptiness of Hollywood.
Rick (Christian Bale) is a slave to the Holywood system. Addicted to success, he simultaneously despairs at the vacuity of his life. Rick's quest to break the spell of his disenchantment takes him on a series of adventures with six alluring women, played by Imogen Poots, Cate Blanchett, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer, Isabel Lucas and Natalie Portman. Which path will Rick choose? In the city of angels and the desert that surrounds it, will he find his own way?
Lush, swirling visuals and Malick's poetic style make this a stunning, sobering look at the flimsy facades of the merry-go-round of fame, and the grim reality of the morning after.
