Watershed Sunday Season traces the final films seen by cultural icons before they died.

Posted on Thu 29 Feb

On Sundays throughout March, Watershed will be remapping the first century of cinema according to the final films watched by a selection of its cultural icons from JFK to Kurt Cobain and Charlie Chaplin. The season offers the opportunity to ‘see what those who see no more last saw’.

Conceived and curated by artist Stanley Schtinter, and coinciding with the publication of his book of the same name (Tenement Press, 2023) - Last Movies embraces the role of chance and fate in shaping an alternative navigation of film history, revisiting five key ‘Last Movies’, and contextualising them within the lives of those who watched them.

“I've observed from a distance the lighthouse on the Bristol harbour known as Watershed, as one of ever fewer public venues on this ever darkening island recognisable for its looking outward, and for offering the refuge a cultural site still can. To present Last Movies in a format extending prior curations, and gesturing towards an expanded version of the book, in the hometown of my esteemed publisher, Tenement Press, is a tribute to all of the ghosts that prop up the project, and the living who deliver it.” Stanley Schtinter

As part of the season, Watershed has partnered with Bookhaus on Wapping Wharf for an evening with Schtinter himself who will talk about his extensive and exhaustive research project (Fri 8 March, 19:00). Tickets cost £6 and include a glass of wine or a soft drink.

This season is presented in partnership with Tenement Press.

Tickets for Stanley Schtinter's Last Movies season are on sale now.

Stanley Schtinter's Last Movies in Paperback and Hardback will be available to purchase from the Box Office throughout March.
