Already in week three of our micro residency. How timeflies... In week one we spent our couple of days at the studio aclimatising, meeting folks and talking through our aims and ideas for this project. Last week, with help and research from Dan, we began to pin down how we want the jukebox to look and what technologies it should contain. We were introduced to Sketch up, a wicked little free google app that we used to create the first design for how the jukebox will look. And here it is... (see image).

We want to design something that is neutral enough that it can be used as a canvas to tell any number of stories. This is a departure from most of our past work which is often site specific or fairly prop-heavy. With the Jukebox, we will create those atmospheres with the tools inside the box - the projections, audio and props concealed inside the drawers.

So, this week has so far been pretty much all about story. We have been talking from day one about influences, thoughts and ideas for the narrative that we want to tell for our prototype. However, it is only now that we are a bit clearer about what we potentially have to play with, that we have begun to figure the two things out together. First an idea of the technology, then an idea for a story, then a struggle over how to marry the two and then today, an extra layer to the story that suddenly throws a rope between the two. Our task now is to build that rope into a proper bridge and then to start testing it...

Tomorrow we're doing a work in progress meet/chat/presentation of the project so far. We're looking forward to telling people about where we are with the thing itself and the story and most probably asking them lots of questions.

The working title of our initial Jukebox story is The Shelf Beneath Your Eyes. It would be fascinating to hear what that might mean to you.
