White God

This audacious dystopian thriller imagines a canine uprising against cruel humans, and what a staggering vision it is. It all kicks off when 13-year old Lili is sent to stay with her ill-tempered dad, a man who has little patience for her best friend, a handsome and unusually smart mongrel called Hagen. With new political laws banning cross breed dogs coming into force in Hungary (this is an actual movement from the extreme right), Hagen cannot stay in their flat long. So he is cruelly dumped on the side of the road, beginning his journey through Budapest’s shady underworld, eventually leading the city’s dogs to rise up against their tormentors. An angry allegory for political and cultural tensions in Europe, White God was filmed with a cast of 100 dogs (animal lovers rest assured that the upsetting scenes of animal cruelty were fakes and all the dogs were homed after filming) and is a brilliantly ambitious, visceral film that has left Festival audiences (it picked up the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes) astonished – you have never seen anything like it in your life.
