Working in a munitions factory during the war, Celia (Patricia Roc), Gwen (Megs Jenkins) and Jennifer (Anne Crawford), unexpectedly find friendship and purpose despite their differences, amongst a community of women from across classes and backgrounds, all pulling together for the war effort.
To encourage women to take up factory work in wartime, the British Government commissioned Millions Like Us; the debut joint directing credit for Frank Lauder and Sidney Gilliat. Comedy writers (best remembered for creating the characters of Caldicott and Charters in Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes), they were charged with making a serious film depicting the effect of WWII on ordinary British women, whom could be called up for service at any time.
A perfect blend of comedy and drama, it depicts the lives of ordinary British women facing the new and everyday problems of wartime life and work.
Followed by a discussion with Girls Like Us curator Stephen Woolley wih author Lissa Evans (who wrote Their Finest Hour and a Half, the novel Their Finest is based on).
