In memory of Trini

Posted on Tue 1 Aug 2023

With sad hearts we want to acknowledge the death of Adriene Layne or Trini as we knew her. Trini was a member of the Pervasive Media Studio community since 2017, having joined us on a micro residency to develop her Voice Letter prototype into a product, and quickly became a full resident.

Voice Letters were designed by Trini to bridge the gap between the literate and pre-literate worlds, Trini's recordable postcards could send voice notes between families and were being trialled in hospitals for use with the elderly and in prison populations.

Trini was a natural entrepreneur with a tenacious energy. She was loving and quick to laugh and was joyful to be around.

The idea for a Voice Letter first came to her when her elderly mother was unable to keep up with communications. She initially worked with the University of the West of England to develop it where she won a Biz Idea Award. She also won Bristol University's The SPARK Award, gaining first place over thirteen other companies. In 2021 she was shortlisted for the South West Tech for Good awards and was also part of the SetSquared community.

Trini was an activist and a tireless supporter of her community, where she used her coaching skills to support people to find solutions around housing, job seeking or everyday issues - encouraging them to live their best life.

In a blog for us in 2017 she said

'I am the mother of three beautiful children. I worked within Local Government for the past 22 plus years in a variety of roles and I have met people from all walks of life. I became aware that there is a hidden society, within the wider society, of individuals who have serious issues around literacy and being able to communicate on a daily basis in a world which is not so simple to them. I love my work, truly living up to making a difference to mankind'.

Trini will be missed and we send love to her family for their loss.
