Dream Director

A multi-user interactive installation developed by Luke Jerram, recipient of the 6th Clark Bursary, which audiences experienced during their sleep.

Luke Jerram, recipient of the 6th Clark Bursary, developed Dream Director, a project that evolved from previous research at the University of the West of England. He and his team were interested to find out if the introduction of sound could affect people’s dreams. They engineered a series of sleep pods which could deliver sounds to the participant whilst they slept. Read his journal, watch films documenting his progress and listen to a panel discussion here.

During the Bursary Luke explored how the piece could be developed to form a multi-user interactive installation, delivering a potentially artistic experience to members of the public as they slept within a gallery. Events were held at Watershed and Arnolfini gallery in Bristol to test the device out and to explore the artistic possibilities in the cross over of science and art. The Dream Director then toured to key galleries in England; ICA in London, FACT in Liverpool, Delaware Pavillion in Bexhill on Sea and Compton Verney.

Luke Jerram is an increasingly recognised international artist. His sculptural practice has been described as 'a poetic fusion of science, technology and art'. His multidisciplinary approach involves the development of large-scale installations, such as 'Tunnel Vision', a fusion of architecture, candlelight, surround sound and the viewer's imagination set in a disused railway tunnel in Staplehill, Bristol. He also makes small art gifts such as 'The Talking Engagement Ring'. Documentation on Dream Director and his other work is also available in his book Art in Mind.

In addition to this, Luke has produced live art projects such as 'Sky Orchestra', the hot air balloon artwork that plays music down onto the sleeping public. Sky Orchestra has been performed over the world, between 22 - 27 July 2011 took place in London to herald a year to go to the 2012 Games. The Mayor of London Boris Johnson teamed up with London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT).
