Shoot From The Hip was a screening of short films curated by Watershed's Future Producers for young audiences. They selected films submitted to Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival 2013 linked by a 'coming of age' theme. The five films screened herald the skill and power of story-telling from female European directors, depicting visceral and compelling accounts of people taking control - from a girl lost in fantasy, to a young woman exploring her cultural identity, to a group trying to get through a single meal.

In this post-screening discussion Future Producer Jenny Messenger is joined by Nida Manzoor, Director of Arcade, and Kira Richards Hansen, Director of Damn Girl. Together they discuss the processes behind developing and shooting the films, the stylistic decisions, and being a woman in the film industry. Their advice is do not let the current gendered status quo hold you back, work hard and make the films you want to make.

Future Producers is a unique talent development opportunity for 18 – 25 year olds to get a foot in the door of the creative industries. Watershed is working with aspiring programmers, online curators, event managers, marketers, writers, workshop facilitators, presenters, filmmakers, designers and artists who want to develop the broad skill set associated with being a producer in the cultural and arts sector.

Inspiring young creative talent - the Fresh Flix film and art strand for kids and young people has been developed by Watershed’s Future Producers, a group of up-and-coming creatives with a flair for programming.
