A Sunday in Hell - Director's Q&A

A Sunday in Hell is a feature-length documentary directed by Jørgen Leth chronicling the 1976 Paris – Roubaix bicycle race. The film follows the race from the perspective of the participants, organisers, and spectators, and is best known as being the most dramatic of the cobbled classics – a series of races that take place on difficult, paved terrain. The latter part of the race famously presents various challenges to the riders, who have to contend with narrow, cobbled tracks that produce clouds of dust on dry days, and become slick with mud in rainy weather.

In this event director Jørgen Leth answers audience questions, and talks about the film from its inception through to production, as well as discussing his love for cycling.

Jørgen Leth is an award-winning Danish director, poet, and sports commentator who is celebrated for the experimental style of his documentary films. Retrospectives of Leth’s work have been showcased all over the world,

In this director's Q&A, Jørgen Leth was in conversation with William Fotheringham, cycling columnist for the Guardian.

This event took place as part of Cyclescreen 2011, Bristol's dedicated bike film festival of inspiring cycling films, documentaries, lectures and interactive events celebrating cycling culture in its varied forms.
