The ever-prolific François Ozon makes a return with this sumptuous period piece set in the aftermath of WWI, where a young woman forms an unlikely bond with a man she encounters at her late fiancé's grave.
In a small German town after the end of the war, Anna (Paula Beer) mourns daily at the grave of her fiancé, who was killed in battle. One day, mysterious young Frenchman Adrien (Pierre Niney) also lays flowers on her fiancé's grave. The pair embark on a friendship - Anna finding solace in Adrien's memories of her beloved - but as her sorrow begins to lift, and the two become more attached, some striking truths emerge, forcing Anna to question her feelings.
Beautifully filmed in black and white, finely acted and consummately executed, Frantz is a brilliant tale of love and remembrance.
