Popular films such as Avatar have propelled 3D into mainstream culture, precipitating an explosion of creative experimentation by producers. But 3D technologies have potential to go beyond the cinema space, in 3D video messaging, retail, gaming and even for surgeons using 3D operating theatres.

In 2009, iShed and world-class projection artists AntiVJ received funding from The Technology Strategy Board to prototype software which makes it easier for producers to create small-screen 3D experiences.

As part of this project a public demonstration was held at Watershed to assess the creative and commercial potential of this technology. This installation used projectors and cameras to track users’ movements and create an illusion of moving around virtual 3D objects. View the video here.

AntiVJ continue to develop this technology and use the learning gained in this project in their work around the world.
