'Exploring volumetric capture and augmentation of dance performances'

Jack Norris from Zubr Virtual Reality and choreographer Julia Thorneycroft join us this week to share ‘Immersion dance’ an experimental project they have been exploring together to test new ways of showing dance and dancers in virtual and augmented reality. They have been playing with emerging technologies such as volumetric capture and 3D scanners looking for easy to use ways of capturing and staging live performance in 3D.

They will share some of their findings and prototypes with us that are currently being tested in care homes, hospitals and schools around Bristol.

After the talk Jack and Julia will set up the prototypes in Watershed's cafe bar so you will have a chance to try the experiences for yourself.

Immersion Dance is a collaboration between Zubr Virtual Reality and Julia Thorneycroft Dance, an Arts Council-funded R&D project using special 3D video cameras to record raw depth capture in dance.

Zubr is a virtual reality startup with a focus on creating immersive experiences with 3D scanners and smartphone technology. Julia Thorneycroft Dance is a contemporary dance company with a number of successful live productions under its belt.

This lunchtime talk occurs during Digital Bristol Week and we welcome everyone taking part in the week to join us. The talk is free but space is limited so we recommend arriving early to be sure of a seat.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.

Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around just before the talk. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk to book your place on a tour.
