The Imitation Game
classified 12APlease note: This was screened in Dec 2014
Benedict Cumberbatch surely has an Oscar® nomination in the bag for his performance as yet another eccentric prodigy (after Steven Hawking, Julian Assange and one Sherlock Holmes): mathematician and cryptanalyst Alan Turing, whose biting, anti-social intelligence helped cracked the seemingly unbreakable Nazi enigma code (by which Germany's naval forces received their instructions). His wartime achievements counted for nothing when his homosexuality fell foul of the law in the early 1950s, sending an already fragile personality into a doomed freefall. Following his schooldays and arrest as well as his wartime service, this is an energetic riff on moral, sexual and societal codes. With a great ensemble cast (including Charles Dance, Mark Strong and Keira Knightley as the only woman allowed into the inner circle of codebreakers), The Imitation Game is a great mix of drama and suspense and one of the best British films of the year.
