Terrence Malick's groundbreaking and influential debut is a uniquely American fairy tale, dreamlike and haunting. Based on a real-life murder spree and told via the childish musings of the naive Holly, recklessly wrapped up in their own adolescent world which is brilliantly underlined by the use of Carl Orff's percussive folkdance-like Gassenhauer, the couple’s cold, detached killings seem all the more shocking.
