Director Stu Maddux’s delightful documentary connects with the queer community of the past as it explores the old archive films, tapes and home videos that are languishing in the closets and attics of so many LGBT people and their families.

What did it feel like to be queer in the 1930s, in The Castro during the 1970‘s or the day Harvey Milk was shot? If you want to feel the past not just read about it, the answer lies in the treasure trove of home movies and videos made by the LGBT communities of the time. And whilst the history of queer cinema is well known, this is the first time personal, home made films on LGBT lives have taken centre stage. As reels and reels of home movies are showcased, from as early as the 1930’s, they chronicle LGBT history through the intimate lens of extraordinary, everyday people documenting their lives, capturing everything from ordinary, mundane events to very personal views of monumental moments in LGBT history.

This is a revealing look in to those hidden lives and an endorsement of the importance of saving and preserving your own stories. Followed by a Q&A with director Stu Maddox.

Screening as part of LGBT History Month and presented in partnership with Queer Vision and Bristol Pride. This Queer Film Network tour is supported by the BFI Film Audience Network.
