La La Land 12A

An ambitious jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) fall in love while pursuing their dreams of stardom, in this dazzlingly stylised homage to the classic Hollywood musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle.

Mia (Emma Stone) is a wannabe actress, barely holding down a day job on a studio lot while juggling auditions for second rate parts, while Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a brooding jazz purist who dreams of running his own nightclub. The film follows them as they meet, argue, flirt, fall in love, sing, dance and face the ups and downs of love and life in Los Angeles - and the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

This all-singing, all-dancing romance (Stone and Gosling prove to be complete naturals in one of the best cinematic pairings since Rogers and Astaire) is a rare thing: a grown-up musical that's not kitschy or a joke. It's one of our favourite films of the last few years, and La La Land will have you dancing out of the cinema - but that said, it's not all sugar and spice and happily ever after - and that's exactly what makes it so remarkable.
