The Way We Talk
classified 12A SThe lives of young deaf people are explored in all their intricacies in this earnest, superbly performed drama, set in contemporary Hong Kong.
Wolf, Alan and Sophie, are deaf, twenty-something friends navigating their way through life, each one with a different experience of their deaf identity. Wolf was born into a deaf family, and embraces sign language with confidence despite facing obstacles; Sophie, was given a cochlear implant at a young age, and continuously strives to fit in, despite having a “deaf accent" and Alan, also has a cochlear implant like Sophie, but is capable of both spoken language and sign language. Bound by love and friendship, the three embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Known for his popular films on youth culture, director Adam Wong Sau-Ping's latest film exposes the hearing world's prejudices whilst creating a moving portrait of friendship and belonging and the search for identity and community.
All screenings will feature Descriptive Subtitles.
