Fashion's carbon emissions are estimated at over two billion tonnes annually (McKinsey, 2020); that's not to mention its massive water consumption, the poor pay and conditions of its workers, and all the other respects in which fashion is largely unsustainable. This needs to change.

Consumer activism has proved a powerful means for change since the late 18th century. Nowadays, what consumers mainly need is the right information in the right place, and the means to act collectively. SUST is a digital platform designed to empower consumers to make more sustainable fashion choices, and motivate brands to make more sustainable items.

This talk will cover:

- The background consumer research which Tim carried out jointly with Prof. Chris Preist, Dr. Fiona Spotswood, Jennifer Daniel and others of the University of Bristol

- An introduction to the platform, https://sust.earth

- The challenges of creating a community of sustainably-minded shoppers who will crowd-source the information they need, and act upon it.

This work was funded by the Brigstow Institute and Matter II Media.

Studio resident Tim Kindberg is a fiction writer (champignon.net) and digital creative (matter2media.com). He makes platforms and apps that foster new and inclusive forms of creativity, and enable us to make sustainable choices. He writes sceptically about major technologies including AI, and fictionally about climate change and the struggles between humanity and the systems it has created.

Join us online on YouTube Live, or in the building on Friday 2nd June 2023 at 1pm for the talk and to take part in the Q and A discussion afterwards.
