On 30th April 2025, a select group of fifteen students from SGS College, boomSatsuma (Bristol Film School), St Katherine’s School, and City of Bristol College spent the day at Aardman Animations studios for a special showcase from Aardman Academy!
Kicking off proceedings was a talk with Lead Animator, Writer and Director Andy Symanowski. Andy has a wealth of experience, having worked with Aardman since Chicken Run (2000), so he was able to share some top insights on the medium and forging a career in the creative sector. This included showcasing some of the models used in the films and answering how they became iconic.

“I really enjoyed the experience. I liked seeing the process of it all, and seeing the models of the characters close up and what it was like shooting iconic films.”- Isabel.
Following on was Junior Art Director Katherine Pitts, who, alongside providing advice on studying and entering the industry, led a practical session creating props. Attendees were tasked with pitching a prop for a Wallace & Gromit feature, before designing and moulding it out of plasticine – here is one of the models!

“It was nice, especially liked getting more information on how you start your career. I will be checking out Screenskills.”- Harry
After lunch (with plenty of Wensleydale, of course!), the group had the chance to explore sets that are currently in production and the rest of Aardman Academy studios. No photos were allowed due to the strict confidentiality needed when making films, but it was inspiring seeing other early-stage creatives in action.
“Meeting professionals from the industry gave me a real boost of energy and motivation to continue pursuing my path in animation. Thank you for such a memorable and uplifting visit!” – Vladislav
A huge thank you to Aardman Academy for providing this exclusive behind-the-scenes opportunity, igniting a spark between new connections for some exciting future collaborations – watch this space!
