2023 Pre-selectors for depict

DepicT! is the 90 second short film competition run in partnership between Watershed and Encounters. We selected three 18-25 year olds to work with us as a pre-selector for Depict 2023. Find out about them below…


Leo Kirby

Leo Kirby is a filmmaker currently studying at UWE Bristol, he’s driven by a desire to create impactful documentaries that delve into untold stories. His passion lies in capturing the captivating lives of unique individuals from diverse corners of the globe, illuminating their remarkable narratives through the power of filmmaking.

Billy Evans

Billy Evans has recently graduated from the University of Gloucestershire with a degree in Film Production, where he specialised in Cinematography. His graduate film Neonate won the ‘Camera Work Craft Award’ at the RTS South West Student Awards in 2023 as well as being nominated for best cinematography at the Independent Horror Film Festival in 2022. Billy is now working in the camera department and aspires to be a cinematographer in film and TV.

“I’m very excited to be a selector for DepicT this year as there are so many ways to be creative within a 90 second runtime. Having studied a wide range of short films at University, I can’t wait to watch the variety of genres, styles and voices that DepicT is praised for showcasing every year!”

Esme Wallace


Esme is a filmmaker and story artist. She graduated from Falmouth University and is now living in Bristol. Also recently, she stumbled upon all of the fabulous opportunities that Watershed and others continually put forwards.

“I’m hugely pleased to be participating as a pre-selector for the Depict 90 second short competition. Watching short films ignites so much excitement and many dancing ideas inside me; I will enjoy the process of considering each film with care.”
