16mm Projection Taster Session

part of Reframing Film

Event

Sat 26 July 15:30, 17:30

Undershed, Watershed

Ever wondered how to project 16mm film? As part of the celebrations of the centenary of the creation of the first film society this is an opportunity to get hands-on with 16mm film.

To celebrate the centenary of the creation of the first film society, we invite you to get hands-on with 16mm, a film format (the technical term is ‘gauge’) that democratised access to films (as well as filmmaking) thanks to the more flexible and mobile nature of the cameras and the projectors (and their price point compared to 35mm.) Suddenly, film was no longer confined to cinemas…

Join Graeme Hogg (The Cube Co-founder and Nachleben Experimental Film Archive), BFI National Archive Curator Rosie Taylor and Charlotte Bendrey (Other Ways of Seeing Co-curator) for an afternoon of film on film. You will learn the basics of 16mm projection and splicing and get an introduction to the artistic possibilities of analogue film through hands-on, experimental techniques. The format will be interactive so you’ll get a chance to ask lots of questions and try things out.

Please note for this workshop no prior experience of film technology or making is needed.

Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
