The Essay Film in Three Dimensions

In this Lunchtime Talk, sister sylvester will explore the possibilities of working across artist books and essay films to create communal artistic experiences. 

She will share insights into her practice, which brings together analogue and digital technologies to create collective experiences and invite audience participation, and will discuss her use of handmade books and shared reading within projects such as The Eagle and The Tortoise, Drinking Brecht, and Constantinopoliad, and methods for exploring philosophical stakes of new technologies in Shadowtime and Our Ark.

About sister sylvester

sister sylvester is a multimedia artist. Her most recent works, Constantinopoliad, won the Interactive award at CPH:DOX 2025, and Drinking Brecht, an interactive documentary, premiered at IDFA 2024. Both continue to tour internationally. Her work has been called ‘genuinely subversive’ by Time Out NY; ‘imaginative and original’ by New York Times; ‘pulse-raising’ by Exeunt Magazine,  ‘apocalyptic’ by artforum, and an ‘otherworldly, intimate, off-kilter, queer artistic orgasm’ by Life Magazine, Greece.
