Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle), often described as the world's greatest living animator, lends his exceptional imagination to an enchanting, magical story loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. Ponyo, a perky little goldfish adventures on to land and is rescued by Sosuke, a 5-year-old boy who lives on a cliff above the ocean and promises to protect her always. Their friendship strikes in Ponyo a burning desire to become human, but the actions she takes to achieve her dream trigger a catastrophic tsunami that floods Sosuke's village.
