Low Budget/High Impact: The Blair Witch Project
screening on:
Sun 21 Feb
The most profitable film of all time and independent cinema's first true blockbuster, The Blair Witch Project stunned audiences in 1999 with its suffocating sense of terror. The making (on disorientating handheld cameras) and marketing (its early online viral campaign was genius) of the film is the stuff of legend: a genuinely realistic tour de force. The film purports to be footage shot by three missing film students during a trip to Maryland woods to make a documentary on the local legends surrounding an eighteenth century witch. Hounded by an evil presence in the woods, the hysteria mounts, the filmmakers begin to crack and they are never seen again.
