Talk: Adapting Cain for the Cinema or How Many Ways can the Postman Ring?
Sun 12 Mar, 13:00
An illustrated talk by Liz Bird from Bristol University's Department of Drama: Theatre, Film and TV. The main focus of the talk will be on how Visconti and Garnett interpreted Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice [published in 1934] with some reference to Rafelson's 1981 film version. The literary text will be compared with the differing ways in which the film directors interpreted the story. We will also look at how the choice of actors and the use of mise en scene alters the way in which the original novel is presented on screen.
