The Extended Theatre Experience is an experiment that has been running since November 2008 exploring how technology can extend and ultimately enhance a live performance experience, like theatre or a music concert.

Watershed, Bristol Old Vic and Hewlett-Packard Labs worked together funded by the Technology Strategy Board, to create a specially-commissioned, short piece of theatre that embeded new video and audio capture technologies in to every element of the production. Over a run in April at the Bristol Old Vic, the team tested the capacity of this technology to capture the “experience” of attending a live performance, or even of performing on stage.  The team then explored different ways of delivering this digital experience to a viewer or end user, either inside or outside the auditorium.

A short piece documenting the process of the Extended Theatre Experience has been created, filmed and edited by studio resident Geoffrey Taylor.
