A summer of fun at Watershed – for kids, grown-ups and everyone in between!
This August, Watershed is your place to play, explore and unwind – whether you’re looking to entertain curious kids, dive into world cinema, get creative, or just enjoy a spritz and a bite to eat by the water.
We’ve packed the month with experiences for all ages: from giant robotic inflatables in our immersive gallery Undershed, to space-themed family films, hands-on workshops and a summery small plates menu.
Whatever the weather, there’s something here to spark imaginations and brighten your summer days (and nights).
For Curious Minds of All Ages
The Hothouse Laboratory
Pay what you can from £2.00 | Undershed Gallery | Age 2–102
Step into the glowing, robotic jungle of The Hothouse Laboratory – a world of giant inflatable plants, mysterious sounds and playful technology. Created by Bristol-based studio Air Giants, this immersive environment invites families to invent stories and explore together. These huge soft sculptures shift and respond to touch, filling the space with movement and light. Is it an alien garden? A forgotten research lab? You decide. Sessions last up to 2 hours (but 30–45 mins is plenty for most). Expect something magical, mysterious and completely unique in Bristol this summer.
For Families
Summer in the Stars
Saturdays in August | 11:00 | £6 / £5 for 12 and under
Blast off into a different galaxy every Saturday morning in August with this season of space-themed family films, curated by Dáire Carson of The Little Film Society. From classic animations to cult gems, Summer in the Stars is packed with cosmic adventures for all ages. Expect favourites like WALL-E and Treasure Planet, poetic anime Night on the Galactic Railroad, and a special live-scored screening of Georges Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon. Perfect for curious kids, nostalgic grown-ups, and anyone dreaming of the stars.
Creative Family Workshops

These hands-on workshops will be inspired by our films and exhibition – led by artists and technologists to help spark imaginations and make memories. Keep an eye on our website for full details – and sign up to our Family Newsletter to be the first to know when they're announced.

Fresh, salty, savoury, crunchy – our new small plates menu is perfect for post-cinema snacks, grazing lunches or a laid-back bite by the water. Highlights include: Fritas Bravas with Aioli, Pickled Watermelon & Almond Salad and Cheese, Potato & Chive Bites with Branston Mayo.
For Everyone
Summer Cinema
Our summer film programme is bursting with cinematic gems from across the globe – from restorations and retrospectives to bold new releases.
Highlights include:
- Savages: a lush stop-motion tale of forest resistance, from the director of My Life as a Courgette
- The Before Trilogy: revisit Linklater’s epic love story over three weeks
- Dreams, Young Hearts & Little Trouble Girls: a powerful trio of queer coming-of-age film

Open Thu–Sun from midday
Right on the water, Undershed bar is your alfresco stop for drinks, snacks, ice cream and our famous Ice Cream Nachos. Now open until the end of September – a perfect spot for sunny hangs and post-film debriefs.
