When we had the sensors all wired up- and working with an arduino, we took took a range of different kinds of sonar sensors to a large space to check out which ones worked best, and also – to test out how much interference there might be when you have a lot of sonar sensors in one space.

We tried out quite a few, and discovered if they pointed downwards at a slight angle, then they worked pretty well together in the same space. We did try out 4 sensors together, and this seemed fairly successful. We ended up going for the one that had a long and wider range… I was surprised, as I thought the narrow beam one would be better…. Matt’s also working on various data smoothing techniques – see ‘The Strangeness Filter’ post.
