You are invited to apply to join a group of people exploring real and potential home technologies, through a series of online meetups over the winter of 2025/26. We believe that the environments we live in shape what we imagine as possible for ourselves. The technologies we have at home are often designed for a specific version of domesticity and based on assumptions about how that relates to wider society.

We are interested in questions like:

  • What technologies might help us to create new kinds of kinship?
  • What does it mean to share our most intimate data with people we don’t know?
  • What tools govern the relationship between home and work?
  • What possible futures are missed when we neglect the home as a site of experimentation?

Meetups will take place online from 5–6pm on the first Wednesday of each month, from November 2025 to March 2026.

This series of online meetups will encourage thoughtful reflection and making things with our hands. We believe that this approach can access new ideas, create bonds between people, and build confidence that the future is something we can make, together.

This is an experiment for us in a new way of making, which brings people together over time, connecting the ideas we share online with the material of our homes.

The goal is not to come up with viable products, or even to develop a specific research agenda, but to grow a community of practice with a shared interest in these questions. This can inform speculative work and help build a strong foundation for future ideas.

This will be a series of 5 monthly online meetups, with up to 12 total participants, recruited by the Pervasive Media Studio from the following groups:

  • Studio residents
  • UWE Bristol researchers
  • University of Bristol researchers

If we have more applications than spaces available, we will curate the group based on bringing together a varied mix of skills and perspectives. Priority will be given to those who experience barriers attending in-person events.

For studio residents who would not otherwise be paid for this time, we can offer a stipend of £100 to support the cost of attending the whole series.

Please apply using this form by Tue 15 August.

This event is part of Home - a year of making, experiencing and sharing ideas of home. Throughout 2025 Watershed is hosting a programme of films, immersive art, talks and workshops that will explore the many different ways in which people find, make, imagine, long for and escape home.
