This week was all about Scrapstore Challenge:

‘Scrapstore Challenge is based on the popular TV show Scrapheap Challenge. It gives you a chance to live that engineering dream; only instead of a scrapheap you will be using bits of scrap from Bristol’s very own Scrapstore.

The game consists of completing set tasks in teams of 3 to 4. On completion of the task your creations will be put to the test against the opposing team.

Not only will you be scored on the functionality of your invention, you will also be judged on the style. Yes, this is not just a competition of innovation; it is also a test in design.

No previous building, engineering or artistic experience is necessary, the game is designed to encourage creativity.’

I hosted the very first full run of Scrapstore Challenge, a playtest to see the full potential of the game.

I convinced a number of brave volunteers to be my guinea pigs.

The tasks contained two elements – functionality and style. The teams were asked to complete challenges such as ‘build a bridge for a vehicle to cross - in an organic style.’ They had 30 minutes before the bridge was put to the test.

The session lasted for 2 hours and 30 minutes; I was surprised that we managed to hold the play attention of adults for that long.

It looks like Scrapstore Challenge will be going ahead in the Scrapstore in October, so if you’re itching to act out that engineering dream stay tuned for dates and booking information!
