Deaf Conversations About Cinema: Red Rocket
Please note: This event took place in March 2022
Join us at the 17:00 screening of Red Rocket on Thu 17 March which will feature Descriptive Subtitles and an introduction from Mark Cosgrove, Watershed Cinema Curator. This will be followed at 19:15 by a post screening discussion in the Café & Bar with audience members and Mark. The evening will be hosted by Deaf artist, performer and filmmaker David Ellington and will feature BSL interpretation throughout.
The off-beat new film from writer-director Sean Baker (The Florida Project andTangerine) stars Simon Rex as a washed-up pornstar who finds himself returning to a hometown that barely tolerates him.
Mikey is an adult film actor who has been chewed up and spat out by the Los Angeles adult entertainment industry after 20 years of trying to make it big. Down on his luck, he's forced to return to his Texan hometown and moves back in with his estranged wife. A portrait of America's underclass, the film is driven by Rex's darkly funny, raw and human portrait of a uniquely American hustler.
But this notorious character isn't given the most warmest of welcomes from the town's residents, and when he meets 17-year-old cashier Strawberry (Suzanna Son), he falls right back into his old habits...
Please join us in the Café & Bar for an informal discussion after the screening, which will include BSL interpretation. You’ll receive 10% off drinks with your cinema ticket – so grab a glass and let us know your thoughts about Red Rocket.
Please note:
There’s also a DS screening of Red Rocket on Sun 13 March at 14:00 in case the 17:00 screening on Thursday is too early – please just join us at 19:15 in the Café & Bar for the conversation.
