It’s been a swelteringly hot week here at the Studio, not that we would ever complain about that. With ice cream within walking distance and the Watershed’s summer specials we’ve been keeping our cool. Although the blue air-conditioning socks that adorn the Studio’s ceiling might have helped too! Here are last week’s highlights..

Magna Mysteria closed with a bang on Saturday at the big top up by Bristol Temple Meads. Mercurial Wrestler are now taking a well earned rest after maintaining the mystery for so long.

Studio resident Bambo Soyinka ran a Tales of the Trickster open space workshop in the Studio last Tuesday with special guest magician Stuart Nolan. To find out more or to join the Trickster network visit trickstertales.org

Stand + Stare have had a great run at Mayfest, showing The Guild of Cheesemakers to sold out audiences; this immersive theatre piece is a cheese and wine tasting with a fictional narrative. They also installed Theatre Jukebox in both the Bristol Old Vic foyer and the Mayfest Café.

Verity visited HP Labs for a Science lecture on Wednesday entitled ‘Raspberry Pi: Feeding the Computer Scientist in Everyone’. It was great to hear about Raspberry Pi founder Robert Mullin's committment to improving computer science education for young people and training for teachers. They are currently consulting with the government on its plans to restructure the early years ICT curriculum and potentially introducing a Computer Science GCSE. It reminded Verity of the work done here in the Studio last year with students from the University of Bristol's Computer Science department with Product Design students from UWE to prototype projects for Demystifying Robotics, giving young people the tools to get hand on with programming.

Seth Jackson of [PIAS] Media showed Monster Energy round on Friday, showing off the delights of the Pervasive Media Studio and its community.

The REACT Producers ran a work-in-progress workshop with the Heritage Sandbox participants on Wednesday. They took part in a workshop with Watershed's PR agency Ladbury PR to think about the key messages of their emerging projects. Charlotte Crofts from the City Strata project ran a user test at the Whiteladies Picture House and all of the project teams fed back to the group on their progress so far. Dan Dixon has been in New York doing an evaluation project for PunchDrunk who are hoping to put more tech into their experimental theatre piece Sleep No More. He was testing an element of this mixed-reality piece which links a person present in the theatre experience with one person having a text-based adventure online.

It was confirmed this week that Tim Kindberg and Rik Lander are bringing their coffee mug game My Big Break to the Watershed. In this game you help a Hollywood star find money, fame and happiness. Try it out in Watershed’s café/bar at our 30th birthday celebrations on 7 June, or from 11 June onwards.

Speaking of Watershed’s 30th birthday, we’ve been busy confirming our plans for the Pervasive Media Studio open day on 7 June. We’ll be showcasing a spread of talent throughout the Studio and Watershed event spaces, including The Icebook by Davy and Kristin McGuire, The Magna Mysteria Magician’s Wagon and danceroom Spectroscopy (dS), to name just a few of the bigger presentations. Pop in from 12-5pm on 7 June to ask questions and try things out for yourself.
