Week Commencing 28 May

Yippee, summer in finally here and it feels well over a few weeks since we were faced with endless rain clouds! I’m back at my desk at the Studio as my avid readers will be delighted to hear and life in the studio is fully sun charged, as this week’s activity reveals.

Party plans are still going strong for Watershed’s 30th Birthday on 7 June, if you don’t know yet the building is open in celebration, with 30 hours of free activities and of course the pervasive media studio has stepped up to join the rest of watershed with an entourage of creative activity, the studio will be open 12-5, where you will be able to witness the work of many of the studio residents.

Tim Kindberg will be running My Big Break in the Watershed café/bar for it’s 30th birthday and from 11th June it will be a more permanent feature. Read a review about My Big Break here. Tim’s turntable will also be set up in the Pervasive Media Studio for Watershed Birthday, so keep your eyes peeled.

Calvium are developing a visitor app for the birthday, which will a digital visitor’s book, the app will invite you to add a photo, a comment or favourite first memory of Watershed and to tell us what is/was your Watershed era, providing a personal snapshot of the day and discovering how long we have all been connected to Watershed.

Squidsoup have been re-suspending projectors in At-Bristol for their work in progress: Living Timeline the surface in the video is polystyrene which clearly won't survive for long in a child-friendly museum setting, but they have recently finished a beautiful new environment to project onto made from bamboo. Victoria has been running informal open surgeries to support artists interested in submitting an application for the Studio Residencies 2012 programme. Lucky potential candidates have been offered an hour of Victoria’s time to discuss their work, ideas and how the Studio might accommodate them.

It’s an exciting time in the REACT camp, as a second call around the theme of Books and Print as historical, contemporary or future phenomena has been announced. REACT will be funding six collaborative projects with creative economy partners and academic researchers. 

Jon Dovey has been appointing a successor. UWE is interviewing for a new Professor of Digital Cultures who will also become the director of DCRC. Exciting other news Emma Agusita has just been appointed as research associate.

Vanessa Bellaar Spruijt and Mark Leaver have returned from Guimarães in Portugal where they launched the Open City strand with a workshop by James Bridle and a think piece by Charles Leadbeater. In 'The Hospitable City' Leadbeater explores openness as it relates to all aspects of City development. Read The Watershed press release for more information about the programme.

In preparation for their big event; Lumiere Digital’s Ruzhin has been working with the Kinect to recognise different parts of the body enabling performers to interact with projected content. Here is a video of her progress, please read the notes to see whether you might help Ruzhin out.

Ruth Farrar is working on the sound design for an app, using Roddy Doyle’s story map. This interactive map tells the story of Dublin through different voices across the city.

Tangible FX  have released an update to their iMoov offering a new feature which scales and customises Midi signals, they have also been chipping away at some secret work, watch this space.
