Studio residents Calvium are delighted to announce a new collaboration with theatre makers Kneehigh to create Kneehigh Rambles, a mobile application offering free interactive walks for lovers of Cornish stories. Kneehigh are a Cornwall-based theatre company with a reputation for creating challenging, accessible and anarchic theatre for a diverse local and national audience.
In Sept 2012, Kneehigh took part in one of three Calvium app development workshops supported by Arts Council England, the Pervasive Media Studio, University College Falmouth and the University of Plymouth. They explored the opportunities, challenges and affordances presented by mobile applications and subsequently entered a micro-pitching competition to receive further support to develop and publish a full app. Kneehigh proposed Kneehigh Rambles, an idea for an app that would allow them to extend their creative offering to a mobile, digital platform for the first time. They will now work with the team using Calvium’s AppFurnace toolkit to create a new theatrical experience.
As part of Kneehigh’s Connections Programme Anna Maria Murphy, local poet and word witch, has been walking the roads less travelled of Cornwall collecting conversations, local legends and memories from people she meets along the way. Anna then edits, exaggerates and embellishes her collection into dramatic dialogues, stories and poems to make a highly entertaining, and often moving, living landscape rooted in real people and places. Kneehigh Rambles will enable participants to walk some of the roads less travelled with Anna and hear the stories in the locations where they were collected. The app will offer a unique insight into the people and places of Cornwall through the witty and pithy prism of Anna’s imagination.
Jo Reid, Sales and Marketing Director at Calvium says: "We have really enjoyed the process of working with arts and cultural organisations with little or no experience of creating digital tools in this series of workshops. Apps can be a fantastic way to create and extend cultural experiences, using the technology that we carry around with us every day to break out of the walls of cultural venues or to augment the experiences that visitors receive when they take part in cultural events. We look forward to working with Kneehigh on this exciting project."
