Kerry Experimenting with the Vocal Migrations device
I invited Kerry Andrew to Bristol for the day to experiment with the Vocal Migrations device. For the research and development of the work, I thought it would be really interesting to invite different vocalists to try it out - also inviting them to respond to the various open scores I'd been devising… It was really great to have some concentrated time with Kerry just improvising with it, and she came up with some really nice vocal ideas. It worked really well when she had a vocal sample recorded in, and then dueted with it - adjusting her proximity to a barrier to change the pace and rhythm of the 'echo-delay' of the sample. ... worked really well.
This was another moment of realisation that added to my thoughts on how much can be done with one person using it… so for the choir, to keep the instructions for the performance simple… less is more… and going back to the idea of ‘cellular automata’… many simple cells working together to produce complex results. Kerry is going to come and perform at the event in Bedford on December 8th with her solo act ‘You Are Wolf’ following the Vocal Migrations choir work in progress. Tarim also came along to our session as he hadn't been able to get over to the Bedford sessions - so it was really useful for him to experience someone using the device, which was really useful, and we had some good chats about directions to take it, and ways to develop the functionality.
