Description:

Biosphere IV is a new theatre project in development. It’s being created by theatre maker Tom Bailey.

The project responds to a pioneering experiment that took place in America thirty years ago, called Biosphere 2. In this, eight people lived in an enclosed ecosystem for two years, in preparation for colonisation of other planets.

Re-interpreting this experiment, Biosphere IV looks to playfully explore what the future of humans and the natural environment might look like.

Initial explorations are being supported by the Brigstow Institute at the University of Bristol, and Arts Council England, with events taking place at At-Bristol science centre’s Festival ofWhat If (Summer 2017). It has developed alongside Environmental Humanities researchers from the University, and a creative team of sound artists and performers.

The company now looks to take this project to the next stage of development during Autumn/ Winter 2017. We are looking to bring a producer on board at this early stage to help build the future of the project. There are exciting possibilities on the horizon to develop this into a full scale touring performance in 2018.

The Producer position for this period will focus on:

  • Working alongside the creative director Tom as the project continues research and development, helping to shape the
  • Identifying opportunities for future development and completion of the project
  • Identifying and applying for funding streams.

Depending on success, there may well be room for the working relationship to continue towards future completion of the project. Should further funding be obtained, it is likely that the job will evolve towards fully producing a show.

Although Biosphere IV will be based in Bristol and the South West for the foreseeable future, it is not essential that the candidate is Bristol-based, although should be willing to travel.

Tom Bailey is a Bristol-based theatre-maker and director who creates work through his company, The Mechanical Animal Corporation. The company is currently developing projects in Bristol, London, Finland and Egypt. Tom is presently Leverhulme artist in residence at University College London, and was previously artist in residence with the National Trust. He is a resident artist at the Pervasive Media Studio.
