After securing funding from Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund, an exciting opportunity has become available to work with Bristol based Theatre Maker and Performer, Tom Marshman on his latest project – working title, ‘A Haunted Existence.’

  • The Researcher must be willing to devising and facilitating Workshops in conjunction with Tom Marshman which will be carried out with young people at 3 Universities in May. Workshops will predominately address the stories of the men and how the arrests and events that followed dramatically changed their lives, exploring for example what kind of stigma these men might have experienced, what conditions they would have found themselves in after being convicted. The Researcher will also work with the young people, teaching them how to read court records and other historical documents.
  • The Researcher will also be expected to participate and attend all Public Discussions/ Talks regarding the project, sharing research findings and encouraging public engagement and debate, with a specific focus on raising awareness around the persecution of LGBTQ people before decriminalization.
  • The Researcher will produce an online document with research findings which will be accessible and available to view on The Island and Tom Marshman’s website ensuring, an on-going legacy and access to the heritage. We would like to work together with the researcher to find an engaging way to do this, for example it could be a podcast.
  • The Researcher will work closely with the Producer for the project to create a Digital Pack for Schools, Colleges and Universities. The pack will contain information on story of Geoffrey Patrick Williamson, research findings and learnings. It is hoped that the creation of the Digital Packs, gives potential for further Workshops at Schools, Colleges and Universities to take place.

All research to be carried out on a freelance basis with clear deadlines and with support from Tom Marshman and his Producer, Jo Kimber. Regular meetings throughout the 4-month period will be expected and it is desirable that the candidate have an interest in LGBTQ History and an awareness of LGBTQ culture.
