Possibly the best film to come out of Britain in the 90’s and winner of two awards at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival - best director for Mike Leigh and best actor for David Thewlis – this brilliant and controversial film is both a bleak and funny story of alienation and the city as well as a scathing examination of post-Thatcherite Britain.

Johnny (Thewlis), is a charming and eloquent but relentlessly vicious drifter. Disappointed with the material world at the end of the last century, and the impending millennial apocalypse, Johnny is aggressive and confrontational, but also eloquent, sexy and charming. After fleeing Manchester for London he inflicts cynicism and despair on all those he meets. Rejecting anyone who might care for him, his volcanic nature hurls him around London’s back streets on a nocturnal odyssey, colliding with a succession of other desperate and dispossessed people, scorching everyone in his path.

With a virtuoso script and raw performances from Thewlis and co-stars Katrin Cartlidge, Lesley Sharp and Ewan Bremner, this is as fierce and unmissable a film as your likely to see and is guaranteed to stay with you a long, long time.
