Levitating Atoms: artistic possibilities of levitation with ultrasound

Levitating Atoms: artistic possibilities of levitation

part of Lunchtime Talks

Talk

Please note: This event took place in April 2018

Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.

This week Adam Nieman, artist and creative director of Real World Visuals joins us to share a collaborative research project that involves acoustic levitation - the art of levitating objects using ultrasound.

Researchers at the University of Bristol and University of Sussex have made exciting progress in acoustic levitation (using ultrasound to levitate objects). They have been working on increasing control whilst reducing the cost - but what is levitation actually good for?

In this week's talk we will explore the practical and cultural applications, and demonstrate the state of the art in levitation.

The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to studio@watershed.co.uk
