Peter Walters and Katie Davies will present recent results of cutting edge research in 3D printing undertaken within the Centre for Fine Print at the University of the West of England.

In 3D printing, physical objects are created by a computer-controlled fabrication process. Designs created using 3D modeling software or by scanning existing objects can be fabricated by 3D printing in materials which include various plastics, ceramics, metals, glass, and even edible materials such as soft cheese or chocolate. The Centre for Fine Print Research focuses on novel applications for 3D printing within design and the visual arts. Recent projects include the development of a new ceramic material for 3D printing, which allows ceramic artists and designers to create prototype and limited-edition ceramic artifacts which can be fired and glazed in a traditional way. In another recent project, 3D printing techniques were combined with smart “artificial muscle” materials to create interactive artifacts which can move and change shape in novel ways. The talk will also include a recent collaboration between artist Katie Davies and 3D printing specialist Peter Walters, in which a sculpture was created by 3D printing astrophysical data from a pulsar star in outer space.

In addition to its research in the visual arts, the Centre’s activities are closely aligned to the needs of industry. Recent projects and partnerships with industry include Aardman Animations, Denby Pottery, Hewlett Packard Labs, Roland DG, Renishaw and Viridis 3D. The Centre also offers short courses for professionals and students wishing to develop skills in 3D computer aided design, 3D printing, laser cutting and interactive electronics.http://www.uwe.ac.uk/sca/research/cfpr/

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.

Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk
