The "Walk Past A Starbucks, Get A Coupon Sent To Your Phone" Cliche has been used as an example of mobile location based tech for over 10 years now, Apples iBeacon technology was released last year with iOS7, and as an enabler it allows this to become a reality, however it also offers the potential to do a lot more interesting creative and generally less spammy things.

Studio residents Sam & Tom have been investigating iBeacon and testing out a number of different types of hardware beacons, they'll share their experience along with talking about some of the limitation of iBeacon and some ideas of interesting ways to use it outside the typical marketing & retail models.

Although this will be a talk primarily about the technology we're aiming to explain it to a non technical audience and help you understand how you can use it to create the end experience.

We’ll touch on some of the privacy issues people have raised and discuss how to avoid annoying users.

Tom Melamed is the Product Director of Calvium who make apps and help people make apps, including a large number of location and sensor based apps. Sam Machin is an independent consultant and hacker with many years of mobile experience.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.
