Sentiment can be described as an intrinsically multi-modal experience, comprising rich dynamic audio from multiple speakers with related biodata delivered through a wearable haptic interface.

Diane Wiltshire is Creative Director of Sentiment. She is Artist in Residence at the Mixed Reality Lab, Nottingham University and part of the Performing Data Research Group.

Sentiment began in November 2013 where the first participant engagement began. Over a year later and Diane had talked to over fifty participants New Age Traveller, Monks, Army Personal, Asylum Seekers, Academics, Philosophers, Artists, Union Members, MP’s, Transgendered, proud to be 100% heterosexual and the oldest fire walkers in the whole of Shropshire.

Sentiment was developed in three stages. Firstly, live art interventions through participants interviews and Electrodermal activity. The second stage was the development of the interactive soundscape and wearable device which delivered original participant EDA through sensation. The third stage opened up the work to end users at a number of venues (FACT, Eastside Projects) this summer. At each of the venues feedback from the end users was gathered. This allowed the artist to test the presumptions of the work as well as the technical aspects.

During this Lunchtime Talk, Diane will be discussing the different stages of Sentiment. Who are the original fifty participants, how do you ask questions about existence without alienating your participants? What is it like to feel someones opinion as well as hear it?

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.

Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around just before the talk. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk to book your place on a tour.
