This Lunchtime talk will be broadcast Live on Watershed's Youtube Channel.

In July 1969, much of the world celebrated the 'giant leap for mankind' that the successful moon landing constituted. Fifty years later, nothing is quite so straightforward. 'In Event of Moon Disaster' a short film by Francesca, illustrates the possibilities of deepfake technologies by reimagining this seminal event. In her talk, Francesca Panetta gives insight into the making of 'In Event of Moon Disaster' as well as the implications of synthetic media in today’s misinformation-laden media landscape. Richard Nixon's contingency speech was prepared at the time in case the Apollo 11 mission went wrong, but of course, it was never delivered. Now it can be experienced as an alternative history, and it demonstrates how new technologies can bend, redirect and obfuscate the truth around us.

Francesca Panetta is an immersive artist.  She uses emerging technologies to innovate new forms of storytelling that have social impact. She was Creative Director in the MIT Center for Advanced Virtuality. Previous to MIT, she worked at the Guardian for over a decade where she pioneered new forms of storytelling including interactive features, location-based augmented reality, and virtual reality leading the Guardian’s in-house VR studio. In 2011, she pioneered a series of locative audio guides using the GPS on smartphones. She's interested in the way layered media  changes your perception of the real world. Her works have won critical acclaim - receiving awards around the world, and touring the White House, Tribeca, Cannes, Sundance, and more. She was a 2019 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.

Join us, on Friday 2nd July, 13:00- 14:00 for the talk and to take part in the discussion afterwards.
