We review the balance of the community once a year, through an annual Studio Community Inclusion Survey which we ask all Residents to complete.

Today we are sharing the 2021/22 data. The report outlines what we found out - with some context about the questions we ask and what we share with who.

Headline stats from the Inclusion Survey include:

A series of demographic data points as wheel charts

If you read the report, you will see we that had our highest response rate ever this year which is brilliant because it means we have our most representative data set to date. We have also changed some of our methods to gather more depth and detail and have begun working towards an intersectional approach to understanding what people tell us.

Because of these changes it is quite difficult to compare the data over time easily. However, you can read last year's report or the 5 year review from 2016/17 – 2019/2020 for context.

Do get in touch if you would like to talk any of it through (a number of ways to feed back are outlined in the report).

Update on actions

We take inclusion seriously and recognise that there are still steps on our journey towards providing a fully inclusive environment in our community. Building on last year's report, here are some of the new things that we have done in the last year:

Information

  • Introduction of Balance and Belonging approach into the Survey
  • Developed a Residents Complaints and Disputes policy to provide clarity of process around how difficult issues are dealt with
  • Ensured that (optional) Access Riders are now part of all Resident Contracts

Training

  • Gender Smart training for Watershed staff from Milk Presents
  • Ableism training for all staff based in the Studio from WECIL
  • Neurodiversity training for Watershed staff from WECIL

Systems

  • Integrated our inclusive recruitment process into commissions and open calls
  • The last Lunchtime Talk of the every month is now BSL interpreted
  • A Quiet Desks area in the Studio where people are not interruptible
  • An anonymous feedback system (set out in the Residents Complaints and Disputes policy)

Funding

  • Season 2 of The Residents podcasts, looking at the voices and experiences of sub-sections of the community
  • The Studio Development Fund, with a strategic aim around increasing representation in the Studio (this will re-open in January)
  • Inclusion Action Research with our partners and wider community, supported through Bristol+Bath Creatie R+D

We also introduced Resident Commitments into Resident Contracts and ran a series of group and individual conversations around what that meant for us all. All Watershed Staff, including the Studio Team, have signed up to Watershed’s own commitments regarding inclusion.

We will continue to publish our activities and plans as they evolve.
