Steve a sound artist, maker and performer known for an innovative series of sonic augmented reality projects titled 'aura' and as a member of the award winning Owl Project.  As a fellow of the PRSFformusic New Music Plus scheme he has explored audience reactive performances - via mobile phone voting and controllable video projection.  Recently Owl Project have been working with flint knappers; invesitgating their movements using camera and sensor augmented analog modular synthesisors then making music as the knapper creates a paleolithic hand-axe.

Steve not only creates digital systems for his own use, which have often been released for artists and musicians as free and open-source tools,  he also works as a consultant for artists wishing to make complex installations and locative or embedded interactive music work.

As a resident at the Pervasive Media Studio, Steve will be developing a new set of Mutual Instruments (musical interfaces that are designed to be played by more than one person) as well as wider multi-user music making installations.  His Owl Project work will also come into play as they explore new aspects to their light based synthesisor project "Optikit' and multi-player light projecting sound project "Logpile" that recreates a social camp-fire atmosphere.

Steve is fully conversant in electronics, programming accross multiple platforms and does his own wood work.

He particurly likes projects that are:-

  • Collaborative/Co-operative
  • Open (open-source, open-ended or just Open)
  • Systemic (art in systems, systems in art)
  • Interactive/Infront of an audience
  • NOISY!
  • Emergant/Embedded
