classified 18 (CTBA) PSPlease note: This was screened in Dec 2022
“I have nothing to say […] Music says what I need to say. And it is dangerous to say anything, because if I’ve said it already in words there might be nothing left for my music."
A tribute to the legendary composer Arvo Pärt, one of the most listened to living composers in the world.
Known for his minimalistic style (and in particular his self-invented compositional technique tintinnabuli), Pärt is considered to be something of recluse, his person and work has rarely been documented on film. Here we get to know Pärt as a composer, combining an incredible sensitivity with humour and energy in his work, as well as hear from musicians giving testimony to the effect he has had on their life.
His intense collaboration with the Cello Octet Amsterdam forms the heart of this documentary which sheds a bright light on Pärt’s universe. A universe not only inhabited by classical musicians like Tõnu Kaljuste, Candida Thompson or Daniel Reuss, but also by choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, filmmakers including Alain Gomis and young techno musicians like Kara-Lis Coverdale. They are all searching for that Pärt feeling .
