Deaf Conversation about Cinema: Name Me Lawand

Talk

Please note: This event took place in June 2023

Join us at the 1800 Preview Screening of Name Me Lawand on Mon 19 June which will feature Descriptive Subtitles.

This will be followedby a post screening discussion with Edward Lovelace chaired by David Ellington in the cinema, which will then be followed by Deaf Conversations About Cinema in the Café & Bar for anyone who wishes to continue the conversation. The evening will be hosted by Deaf artist, performer and filmmaker David Ellington and will feature BSL interpretation throughout all the discussions.

Edward Lovelace explores the power of communication and community with this rapturous portrait of a young Deaf Kurdish boy.

Five-year-old Lawand is on a quest to find a world where there are people like him – people who will understand him. Since birth, Lawand has been profoundly Deaf and unable to communicate with those around him. He undertakes a treacherous journey with his family from Iraq to Derby, home of the Royal School for the Deaf. But this new life soon comes under threat when the family face deportation. Along with members of the Derby community, they begin a new quest – a fight to stay in the place they now call home.

Employing a striking visual style that frames Lawand’s development, from being voiceless to a voice representing others in the Deaf community, Lovelace’s documentary is an inspirational and touching coming-of-age story.

Please join us in the Café/Bar for an informal discussion after the screening, which will include BSL interpretation. You’ll receive 10% off drinks with your cinema ticket – so grab a glass and let us know your thoughts about Name Me Lawand.
