Deaf Conversations About Cinema: Drive-Away Dolls

Talk

Please note: This event took place in March 2024

Join us at the 18:00 screening of Drive-Away Dolls on Mon 18 March which will feature Descriptive Subtitles and an introduction from Chloe Meineck, a queer artist, designer, researcher and queer community builder. This will be followed at 19:30 by a post screening discussion in the Café & Bar with audience members and Chloe.

The evening will be hosted by Deaf artist, performer and filmmaker David Ellington and will feature BSL interpretation throughout. This comedy road trip caper, directed by Ethan Coen, follows Jamie, a free spirit bemoaning her breakup with a girlfriend, and her shy friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up.

In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee in a rental car from a cheap “drive-away” rental car provider. It turns out they have accidentally been given the wrong car, one which has a secret stash in the trunk, sparking a chase across state lines involving a senatorial sex scandal and a group of inept criminals.

Please join us after the screening in the Café & Bar for an informal discussion, which will include BSL interpretation. You’ll receive 10% off drinks with your cinema ticket – so grab a glass or a mug of something and let us know your thoughts about Drive-Away Dolls.
