“A shimmery, nourishing culmination of ideas and ellipses in a career so elusive as to have taken on a mythic quality..." Variety
Spanish director Víctor Erice's first feature in 30 years deals with the disappearance of a fictional actor who vanished during a film shoot, and explores themes of loss, grief and the exquisite power of cinema.
Julio Arenas (Jose Coronado) disappears while shooting a film. Although his body is never found, the police conclude that he’s been the victim of an 'accident by the sea'. Many years later, the mystery surrounding his disappearance is brought back to the spotlight by a TV programme outlining his life and death, and showing exclusive images of the last scenes he filmed, shot by his dear friend, the director Miguel Garay.
The unfussy elegance of Erice’s filmmaking remains as fresh and clear as ever in this exquisite reckoning of cinema’s power to bring the physically or spiritually dead back to life.
